’Hood A residential neighborhood just two blocks north of the French Quarter. Oak-lined Esplanade Avenue runs from City Park to the River, and in this part, you’re more likely to see locals walking their dogs than travelers toting Mardi Gras beads.
The Vibe It’s all about soaking up the New Orleans residential experience. Have a cup of coffee in the morning on the porch and then take a stroll under the massive oaks that line the streets. Some guests take advantage of the barbecue grill and hang out in the garden; others hit the town all night, but it’s generally a quiet, early-to-bed crowd. This is a place to relax and take it easy.
Rooms It’s a traditional New Orleans mansion with nine beach-themed rooms, each different in layout and style. There’s the huge 1,000-square-foot Admiral’s Quarters, four studios, and a two-bedroom unit with a sofa bed that sleeps six. All the rooms have private bath, full kitchen, and television.
Plus You can really feel at home at this place. The innkeeper, Barbara Ann Locklear, lives on the property and is happy to provide custom services to guests, such as printing out airline boarding passes, finding a babysitter, or even picking up dry cleaning.
Minus Some things are a little outdated. Then again, it’s a historical home. The neighborhood is safe enough by day, but some adjacent streets are questionable at night. Take a taxi to and from the Quarter (expect to pay about $4 one way), or walk in a large group.
